I Saw the TV Glow

Director: Jane Schoenbrun
Release year: 2024
Runtime: 1h40m

tv glow poster

"THERE IS STILL TIME.

Teenager Owen is just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate Maddy introduces him to a mysterious TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack." --Letterboxd description

"I found myself wondering, what if she was right? What if she had been telling the truth? What if I really was someone else? Someone beautiful and powerful. Someone buried alive and suffocating to death. Very far away, on the other side of the television screen. But I know that's not true. That's just a fantasy."

ok guys. buckle the fuck in, because i have some shit to say.

first of all, i wanna make it clear that i am acutely aware that there is an incredibly specific target audience for this film.
this film kinda operates with the underlying assumption that the audience is made up of a demographic (in this case, transgender people) that will understand what is not being explained to it explicitly, and by doing, WILL inevitably alienate people who are NOT the target audience.
and guess what ???? thats COMPLETELY OK !! like seriously when it came out and even a bit after i saw people whining that they just didnt get it/that the message didnt apply to them and instead of acknowledging that and leaving it be they made a massive deal about it.
guess what dickhead?? for people like me aka people who are Incredibly Queer, MOST THINGS in the mainstream dont apply to US!!

let me put it this way: take any for the sake of this lil thought experiment ill pick one from my watched list on letterboxd at random: Mean Girls (Mark Waters, 2004).

• what does the plot revolve around?: a girl new to an american high school in 2004 getting mixed up with the wrong people aka the coolr ich popular girls that are mean to everyone.
• whats demonstrated as the source of the conflict?: girl likes boy, but she cant like THAT BOY because (insert reason here). and uh oh! love triangle!!

these two points, which make up the entire basis of the film, could not be more irrelevant to me.
im not a girl let alone straight, i didnt attend an american highschool and its not 2004 anymore. that being said despite acknowledging that this movie has NOTHING TO DO WITH ME it was still fun.
my point is if i can sit down shut up and enjoy a movie thats not intended for me, while still being able to meaningfully acknowledge what its gettting at as an observer, then so can you.

with that rant out of the way, lets get into what i think abt this film:

when i first watched this it took me a good while of thinking and turning it over in my head to fully understand what i had just watched, and now re-watching and thinking about this film again i still maintain that this film (to me at least) is both comforting and a warning: no matter how long it takes to find yourself you still have time, but if you refuse to look at all you will suffocate and never truly live.
while i do think this applies to everyone and everything, this alone messaging emphasises the film as an obvious allegory for the transgender experience, and it really makes it something that pulled at my heartstrings.

the visual and narrative style of this movie is very different and while i admire it and think the artistic direction is absolutely stunning, i wouldnt watch it for fun or put it as background noise.
the heavy narration is a bit jarring but not so much in a bad way; its just different. if anything the slowness in the film brought by the lack of 'showing', instead 'explaining' what is happening, could be compared to how heavy the task of questioning everything you thought you knew about yourself is, and how detached from the world around you it can make you feel. its not really a narrative style ive ever encountered before and admittedly it had to grow on me a bit, but to be completely transparent and honest with you its just so refreshing to see something even remotely resembling me and my experiences in a big fancy movie that i dont care what the form is; whatever story Shoenbrun wants to tell, regardless of the form it takes, i will listen. i will watch.

as someone who has had the privilege of transitioning early in my life compared to most people like me, this film really solidified to me that i am where i need to be: out of the clutches of mr. melancholy and with my future in my own hands. thsi persoanly aspect really makes me treasure this film and i still consider it one of the coolest films ive seen !!!

willharper before i wrap up this review i wanna mention that i wrote an essay comparing this film to another film for my uni course about the transgender experience: Will & Harper (Josh Greenbaum, 2024). i also talk a lil abt Paris is Burning (Jennie Livingston, 1990) if remember correctly !!!! I personally am still quite proud of it, so I'd like to shamelessly link it here. its about 2100 words, and obvs absolutely no real reason to read it, but i like to think its kinda interesting :)

in case u dont wanna read tho, here are a few quotes from my own writing that i think sum up how i view I Saw the TV Glow pretty well:
"I saw the TV glow oƯers a message that seems nihilistic to the general public but acts as a hopeful warning to its transgender audience. It focuses not on the acceptance of the population around you but on the acceptance of self and the struggle that comes with it that stems from these insecurities. It re-presents the transgender experience as something scary and utilises symbolism and meaning derived from the community’s common experiences."
"Where these films both differ in who they alienate or prioritise, they come together in what the catalyst of acceptance in general is; overcoming the idea that attaining life as your true self is a fantasy."

as i mentioned way at the start, this film may seem out of reach to a lot of people who either arent able to open their mind to what the trans experience is like or simply dont think to, but i still think if one wants to try to understand this is a film you should watch; ignore the voice in the back of your head that may preach about how over dramatic it might seem or how long-winded the explanations are, this film is a 100 minute long metaphor that is incredibly fun to unpack.
