guys,,,,m GUYS,,,,
i fucking LOVE this movie its so good i literally have no words AUGH
a common criticism of this film is that it feels like Wes Anderson is parodying his own movies. you wanna know what i think of that ??? i think the ppl saying that (and it IS important to remember that everyone on thisbeautiful blue and green planet has a right to have an opinion on any such Creative Creations and that there is almost never a Single Wrong Opinion just as there is almost never a Single Right Opinion) are the FUN POLICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LET ME HAVE FUN LET ME ENJOY SILLY PRETTY MOVIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok now with that out of the way, MAN!! As usual Wes Anderson's style just speaks to me in beautiful melodies. the film is colourful and picture perfectly framed!!! the set design is magnificent, the plane scenes are cool, and overall the colour pallette for the film is stunning as usual. i have nothing but praise for the costume department, the set designers and everyone that had any hand in how this film looks at all.
now... on to the story itself... I could pick apart this movie for HOURS.:
this film is about a man, Zsa-Zsa Korda, learning to be human again thanks to his daughter Liesl (and his tutor, Bjorn). He loses everything, makes the CHOICE to lose everything, in order to complete "his most important project of his lifetime", but gains his family in exchange.
its structured around the three mains visiting all the different benefactors of the Phoenician Scheme (the project the film gains its name from) in order to ask them to cover a certain amount of the "Gap", which has been created following a sabotage from the US. visually, these meetings are split up by a small summary of how much they aggree/dont agree to contribute, with the scene of the meeting sometimes not even explicitly stating whether there was success or not, leaving the numbers to speak for themselves much to my amusement.
In between these meetings come the assassination attempts, usually followed by a depiction of Korda in the afterlife, essentially depicting his overcoming of greed and learning peace whilst fighting against death, seeing as hes "in the habit of surviving". I'm not suuuuper well versed in bliblical imagery but the details I did catch were so cool.....
All of the characters introduced are incredible, but I have to say Richard Ayoade's character Sergio wins first place (which is not a surprise considering hes such a contrast to my other favourite role of his, Moss from IT crowd). I will say though, Benedict Cumberbatch's eyebrows as Uncle Nubar were ridiculous in the best way possible. I'm still wondering what the fuck he meant by "I have everybody's blood" though o_o
I mean even the ending was just incredible... Anderson easily could've gone the "and then everybody dies :)" route but instead we get a nice heartfelt epilogue that i really enjoyed.
this film is about a Phoenician Scheme, yes, but it is also about guilt, family, and the death of greed. It is about a family learning to be a family again, and finding their way to an honest fulfilled life.
ill probs think of more to say eventually but AUGH I LOVED THIS MOVIE
