i wish i knew you when i was a kid,
the cavity in my chest aches for time we weren’t given,
screams when i watch you curl up on my bed
chest rising, falling, repeat,
small and uncaring of what happens outside of our warm home.

i gaze down into those black pearls sitting in your eye sockets
as you wait patiently for a small piece of my toast in the morning
and i think to myself,
fuck, if this won’t hurt.

i wish i knew you when i was a kid,
